Learning Literacy in a Play-Based Program

Sharing interesting information from non-fiction texts.
Literacy is all around us, and when we engage with children while they are playing we can bring literacy to them in an interesting and inviting way.  Here are just a few ways we learn to read and write in kindergarten.

Writing on whiteboards.
Planting seeds and labelling them.  We planted apple, maple and popcorn seeds.

Creating a map to the clouds.

We wrote out a recipe for Pumpking Pie and it was YUMMY!!
"Look at what I drew."

Creating a sign that lists the ice cream flavours we sell at the ice cream store.
Writing letters in foam.
Drawing on the chart paper and chalkboards.
Creating letters for our word wall.
Signing up for sharing and presenting in front of the class.
Copying the letters from the word wall into her journal.

Creating a map of our classroom.
Reading interesting books.
Writing on plastic plates.
